Chemistry A Level

IN THE FIRST YEAR STUDENTS STUDY:
Unit 1: Inorganic and Physical Chemistry: This unit provide the opportunity to develop the skills of Formulae writing, quantitative Calculations, Energetics, and explores Atomic structure and Bonding in detail.
Unit 2: Core Organic and Physical Chemistry: This unit introduces Organic chemistry in the form of alkanes and alkenes. Kinetics and Equilibrium reactions are also explored as well as modern Analytical techniques.
ASSESSMENT - 2 written exams:1hr 30 min papers each with multiple choice, short answer and extended writing, both worth 50% of the AS qualification.

IN THE SECOND YEAR STUDENTS STUDY ALL THE AS TOPICS PLUS:
Unit 1: Advanced Inorganic and Physical Chemistry: The topics covered in AS Unit 1 are further explored, Energetics and Redox, with the addition of acid-base calculations and the chemistry of the transition metals.
Unit 2: Advanced Organic and Physical Chemistry: The topics covered in AS Unit 2 are further explored, Kinetics and Equilibrium, with emphasis on further Organic chemical reactions.
Unit 3: General and Practical Principles in Chemistry: This will cover the synoptic element of the Advance Level and to assess conception and theoretical understanding of Experimental methods

Unit 1 and Unit 2: 1hr 45 min written paper with multiple choice, calculations, short answer and extended writing, worth 30%.
Unit 3: 2hr 30 min written paper with multiple choice, calculations, short answer and extended writing, worth 40%.

Practical Work: Students must complete compulsory practical work as it will be examined at the end of the AS and the A Level course in written form. A 'Science Practical Endorsement' will be included on their certificate, if the student successfully completes the practical aspect of the course.

Students will be expected to demonstrate and apply the knowledge, understanding and skills through theoretical and practical work. In addition, they will be expected to analyse, interpret and evaluate a range of scientific information, ideas and evidence using their knowledge and understanding. In Chemistry, you will learn to appreciate the links between theory and experiment, and over time you will acquire good practical skills.
