High School


On joining the school in Year 7, and entering into the Foundation stage of The Kingsbury Curriculum, all students are timetabled for Mathematics for six hours per fortnight. Students are placed into Maths sets, according to their prior Mathematics attainment at Key Stage 2 (Primary). At Kingsbury High School, we offer a range of Mathematics curricula, which are tailor made to the sets that we teach. We offer great support to students for whom knowledge and comprehension of core mathematical skills is severely lacking, whilst maintaining high standards of enrichment and challenge in sets, with the highest attaining pupils, who strive for greater things.

In Year 8, students are timetabled for an extra period, being taught Maths for seven hours in a fortnight. Pupils in this year group are challenged to build on their experiences from Year 7 and to adopt a range of good learning habits. Students are assessed regularly throughout the Foundation stage, completing unit assessments throughout the school year, as well as two major assessments in the Autumn and Summer terms. In addition, students are expected to complete Extended Learning Projects for Mathematics, over a six-week duration, in both years of the Foundation stage, culminating in a well-rounded experience of this subject and its applications in everyday life.

At the start of the Examination Stage, in Year 9, students will have graduated from the Foundation stage and now begin the preparation work for the GCSE examinations. This year sees students begin the first of a three-year trajectory through the GCSE curriculum, consistent with the Edexcel examination board curriculum. Much like the Foundation stage, Year 9 students are assessed regularly throughout the school year and sit three major assessments at the end of each school term (Autumn, Spring, and Summer). These exams give students their first encounters with new concepts and questions which follow the same style as those faced in GCSE examinations. Students’ performances on these assessments offer great feedback and information going forward into Year 10.

The subsequent Examination Stage years (Year 10 and Year 11), sees students complete the syllabus for the Linear Edexcel GCSE Mathematics qualification. Assessment at the Examination stage takes place through three papers taken at the end of the course. The first paper is non-calculator while the second and third allow the use of calculators. All three papers are one and a half hours and 80 marks each.

In the Sixth Form, Mathematics is a very popular and successful subject. The Edexcel A Level syllabus is taught and students who choose double Mathematics do Edexcel A Level Further Mathematics. The love of Maths carries on into tertiary education with many Maths students pursuing courses with a mathematical twist – engineering, finance, pharmacy etc.
