Year 7 Maths Day

Year 7 Maths Day
20th Jul 2023

On Friday, 14th July, Year 7 learners at Kingsbury High School engaged in an exhilarating and educational experience known as the Year 7 Maths Day. This event aimed not only to provide an enjoyable break from the regular curriculum but also to promote active participation in mathematical activities that align with the three keystones of the National Curriculum: fluency, reasoning, and problem- solving.

Event Highlights

  • The Trading Game: The day kicked off with the engaging "Trading Game," where learners were grouped together to participate in a simulated trading environment. This game not only cultivated an understanding of basic mathematical operations but also developed their fluency in mental calculations and decision-making skills.
  • CSI: Michaela Maths: In this thrilling session, learners transformed into mathematical detectives. They worked collaboratively to decipher intricate mathematical puzzles, connecting clues to unveil hidden messages. This activity boosted their analytical thinking and reasoning abilities.
  • The Bunker: The Bunker challenged learners' problem-solving capabilities through a series of intriguing mathematical challenges. These challenges were designed to push learners to think creatively and apply mathematical concepts to real-world scenarios, enhancing their problem-solving skills.
  • The Priorities Game: This session aimed to teach learners about prioritisation and critical thinking. Learners engaged in discussions and debates, presenting mathematical justifications for their chosen priorities. This activity honed their reasoning skills and encouraged them to think logically.
  • Selling Maths: The day concluded with "Selling Maths," a fun and interactive activity that required learners to create a presentation focusing on one of the important Maths concepts. This activity not only sparked their creativity but also encouraged them to think about mathematical concepts in innovative ways.

Some of the quotes from the Year 7s , “It made me more interested because now I have learnt where maths can be helpful and I have learnt the areas that could help me in the future for real-life situations.” , “It taught me the different ways maths is used in the world and the maths games made me realise maths is not as boring as everyone thinks it seems.”

The interactive nature of the sessions ensured that learners were actively engaged in mathematical tasks, which contributed to a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts.

The day was an undeniable success. The event not only provided an opportunity for learners to have fun and engage in exciting activities but also facilitated the development of vital mathematical skills.

We extend our heartfelt appreciation to all the individuals who played a role in organising and executing this remarkable event. The efforts of the organisers, teachers, 6th form helpers, and supporting staff were instrumental in making the day both educational and enjoyable. We look forward to more such events that foster a love for learning and help our students excel in various aspects of their education.
