Course Information
Unit 1 Appraising Music
Students are required to appraise, develop and demonstrate knowledge and understanding of musical elements, musical contexts and musical language.
Areas of Study
Western Classical Tradition 1650-1910
Pop Music
Art Music since 1910
Unit 2 Performance
Students must be able to perform music using one or both of the following ways:
- Inst i) Instrumental/vocal: as a soloist, and/or a part of an ensemble
via ii) Performance via music technology.
Unit 3 Composition
Students must learn how to develop musical ideas, including extending and manipulating musical ideas, and compose music that is musically convincing through two compositions.
One must be in response to an externally set brief (Composition 1)
and the other a free composition (Composition 2).

Unit 1
Assessed though written examination
Exam paper with listening and written questions using excerpts of music.

Unit 2
Assessed as coursework
A Level – 10 minutes recorded performance recital

Unit 3
Assessed as coursework
Score, Recording and Programme Notes

Entry criteria
Four GCSEs Grade 6 or above with a Grade 6 in Music. You also need to have an instrument which ideally will be at Music Grade 5 level
